Thought for the Day--April 4, 2011: Keeping Lettuce Fresh and Crisp

Okay, so today's thought is not exactly stellar--one can't shine every day--but here's a tip about keeping lettuce fresh:
Always cut off lettuce wedges with a plastic knife.
You know how lettuce always seems to turn a rusty color after you have sliced through it with a metal knife?

Something in the metal mixes with something in the lettuce, causing the edges to oxidize and the leaves to sag.

But this doesn't happen with plastic.

I'm sure that this bit of minutia will not change the world in any significant way, but, perhaps, it will extend the life of that head of lettuce you dragged home from the grocery store.
